Men's Soccer Earns Top Conference Honors for Second Straight Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina forward Joseph Ngwenya and head coach Shaun Docking earned the Big South Conference’s Player and Coach of the Year honors, Nov. 12, for the second consecutive season. Ngwenya also received his second straight Scholar-Athlete of the Year billing, and the Chanticleers landed six players on the First Team All-Big South list.

The award marks Docking’s fourth as a head coach and his third while at the helm of CCU men’s soccer. This season, he has steered the Chants to a 6-1-0 mark in the league and the regular season title, along with a 15-2-0 overall record and a ranking of ninth in the nation, the highest ever for Coastal men’s soccer. He now looks to take his squad to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth.

Ngwenya, who led the nation in scoring last season, is at the top of the national standings once again with 2.50 points per game. He also leads the Big South in points, points per game, and game-winning goals, and is tied for first in goals and assists. The math/computer science double major carries a 3.491 grade point average.

Also on the Big South’s First Team, Jordie Hughes is second on the squad with 33 points, and is sixth in the nation in points per game with 1.94. Midfielders Boyzzz Khumalo and Mubarike Chisoni, also First Team honorees, each have 20 points this season, and defenders Chris Moore and Itayi Pondwa have led the charge of a defense that has shut out 10 opponents this season and allowed only 12 goals in 17 matches.

Goalkeeper Andy Paxton was honored as a Second Team selection after leading the league in goals against average this season, and keeper Mark Lenahan, who recorded three shutouts and earned All-Tournament honors at the Bradley Classic and Nike/Clemson Invitational in, grabbed a spot on the All-Freshman Team.

The top-seeded Chanticleers beging tournament action Thursday, Nov. 13, against eighth-seeded VMI at 2:30 p.m. at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium on the campus of Radford University. Every game of the tournament will be StatCast on the Big South’s website.
