Senior Jordie Hughes (Victoria, B.C./Spectrum) scored a goal in each half as Coastal Carolina (9-8-1, 5-2 Big South) defeated High Point (1-14-3, 1-5-1 Big South) in the first round of the Big South Men's Soccer Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 10.Coastal started the game on the attack as sophomore Patrick Robertson (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) had a shot attempt sail high in the first three minutes.
The first tally of the evening was an own goal scored by High Point, knocked in by the keeper after a blocked cross in front of the net (28:53).
CCU added to its lead as Hughes took a cross from sophomore Lachlan Cahill (Kiama, Australia/Kiama) and beat the High Point goalkeeper Adam Ross to the left lower corner from the left side (35:56).
The Chanticleers added one more tally before the intermission as sophomore Daniel O'Brien (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds) beat the keeper in a one and one off the 20-yard crossing pass from freshman Brad Stisser (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) and senior Joseph Kabwe (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Sakubva (Lindsey Wilson)) from the right side to the left side (43:08). It was O'Brien's second goal of the season.
The Chants added to its lead early in the second half as Hughes scored off a penalty kick to increase the Coastal lead and make the final score 4-0 (49:00). For Hughes, it was his 10th goal of the season and moved him into a tie with former Chant Neil Payne for third all-time at CCU with 46 career goals.
For the game, CCU out shot the Panthers 9-8 but were out corner kicked 4-0 by HPU.
Sophomore Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope) won his sixth game of the season and his fourth Big South Tournament game over the last two years. The loss went to Ross, who saw his record fall to 1-13-3 on the year.
Coastal Carolina men's soccer team continues its play in the Big South Men's Soccer Tournament as it will takes on VMI (8-9-1, 1-6 Big South) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11 in the semifinals.
