Men’s Soccer Totals Five First Team All-Big South Selections

Seniors Mubarike Chisoni (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe-Chegutu Lindsey Wilson)) and Boyzzz Khumalo (Soweto, South Africa-Bethlehem (Lindsey Wilson)) highlight the five Coastal soccer players selected to the Big South’s First Team All-Conference team, the Big South announced on Wednesday evening at the annual men’s soccer banquet, Nov. 10, in Birmingham, Ala.

Chisoni is currently tied for the conference lead with 14 goals this season. Khumalo is the current front runner in the Big South and is second nationally with 15 assists this season.

Other CCU athletes selected include senior defensemen Dario Grassini (Pretoria, South Africa-Pretoria Boys) and Itayi Pondwa (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe-Mpopma). Pondwa was selected for the First-Team for the third consecutive season while fellow defenseman Grassini was selected to the First-Team for the second consecutive season.

Junior Jordie Hughes (Victoria, British Columbia-Spectrum) was the fifth and final Chanticleer selected. Hughes is the current reigning Big South Player of the Week and has tallied a tied for league-leading 14 goals to go along with 10 assists this season. Hughes is currently ninth nationally with a scoring average of 2.0 points per game. This was also the second consecutive season that Hughes is a member of the First Team All-Big South. Hughes was also selected to the Big South’s Academic All-Conference team for his grade point average of 3.4 in accounting in tonights ceremony.

Freshman Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C.-Green Hope) was also honored by the Big South as a member of their All-Freshman Team. Weant is currently second in the conference with a goals against average of 1.20.

Birmingham-Southern College’s Jamie Holmes was selected as Conference Player of the Year, Radford’s Patrick Colas was selected as Scholar Athlete of the Year, Winthrop’s Kyle Cupid was selected as Freshman of the Year and VMI’s Head Coach Steve Ross was selected as Coach of the Year

CCU will next take the pitch on Thurs, Nov. 11, as it takes on VMI in the first round of the Big South Tournament at 3:30 p.m in Birmingham, Ala at BSC Soccer Park. The live action can be followed on line at goccusports.com at the Game Day Central location.
