Men's Soccer Clinches Share of Big South Title With 2-1 Victory at Winthrop
More Information: ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team clinched a share of the Big South Conference regular season championship as it improved to 5-0 in the conference after a 2-1 victory against Winthrop Wednesday night (Nov. 7) at Eagle Field. Senior Kheli Dube (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Pumula (Lindsey Wilson)) netted his 10th goal of the season as the Chanticleers have now outscored league opponents 11-2 this season with three shutouts.
With the win CCU improves to 9-7-1 and remains unbeaten in league action at 5-0, while the Eagles fall to 9-3-3 and 3-2-1 in the Big South. Coastal, by virture of its win over Liberty, has secured the No. 1 seed and a bye in the first round for the upcoming Big South Conference Championship for the first time since the 2003 campaign.
The teams were kept scoreless in the first half, but a Winthrop own goal in the 61st minute put Coastal up 1-0. Dube took advantage of a 1-on-1 situation with the goalkeeper, finding the back of the net in the 68th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. The Eagles scored their lone goal after Said Abdi connected off a cross from Cameron Alksnis at the 80:51 mark.
Senior Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope) recorded three saves for Coastal, while Patrick Mitrovich registered two saves for the Eagles.
The Chants return to the field hosting Radford (9-6-0, 3-2-0 BSC) in the regular season finale, Saturday, Nov. 10 (a change from the original schedule of Friday, Nov. 9). Game time is set for 11 a.m., at the CCU Soccer Field.
