CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Federico Bertele, the starting goalkeeper on the eighth-nationally ranked Coastal Carolina men's soccer team, has been named the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for games played Oct. 29-Nov. 4, the league announced today.
Bertele, who was named to the second team all-conference on Monday, recorded 90 minutes of shutout soccer to lead the Chanticleers to the 1-0 win over High Point on Nov. 2. He recorded three saves in the contest, holding the then 12th-ranked offense in the nation scoreless. The shutout was his sixth of the year as he is now tied for fifth on the CCU and eighth on the Big South single-season lists.
The weekly conference honor is the seventh overall for the Chanticleers this season. Ashton Bennett has twice earned Attacking Player of the Week recognition, while Ricky Garbanzo has also been awarded the weekly offensive plaudit. Uchenna Uzo has garnered the league's Defensive Player of the Week honor twice. Scott Shewfelt has also earned a Defensive Player of the Week award this season.
The Chanticleers will begin their march to the 2012 Big South Tournament championship by hosting eighth-seeded Presbyterian College in a quarterfinal round match Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Field.
