CONWAY, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team (8-6-2, 3-2-0 Big South) defeated the Panthers from Birmingham-Southern (5-9-1, 2-3-0 Big South) 3-2 on Saturday, Oct. 21.
In the 32nd minute, the Panthers took the lead 1-0 when Jon-Pierre Anthony took a cross from the far left side from Matt Barcelona and put it past Chanticleer goaltender senior Jeremy Wolfgang (Reading, Pa./Wilson), scoring from about 12 yards out. Wolfgang recorded one save in the contest bringing his season total to 35.
Just before the end of the first half, in the 44th minute, the Chants brought the score to an even 1-1. Mkhokheli Dube (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Pumula (Lindsey Wilson)) crossed to junior Robert Holstein (Middleburg, Fla/St. John's County (Queen's University of Charlotte)) who deflected to junior Kevin Van Den Berg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) who tapped it in for his seventh goal of the year.
Most of the second half was scoreless, until the Chants scored two late goals in the win. In the 83rd minute, Dube put a header past the Panther goaltender Joseph Anthony to put Coastal on top 2-1. Holstein and sophomore Djamel Bekka (Tulsa, Okla./Union) assisted on the goal. Anthony collected five saves in the game.
Soon after in the 89th minute, senior Luke Ibbetson (York, England/Millthrope (Lander)) scored his ninth goal of the season to bring the final score to 3-1. Ibbetson scored in the far post when he collected a header flick from Holstein, who got the ball off a cross from Dube to get the third Chant goal of the game. Holstein's assist total for the season is now seven while Dube has six.
Coastal outshot the Panthers 15-3 and also took seven more corner kicks which were 8-1.
The Chants will continue conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 25 when they take on Winthrop at 7 p.m., in Conway on the CCU Soccer Field.
