Men's Soccer Blanks Radford 1-0

CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina University's Tobin Whitmarsh scored the match's lone goal on a penalty kick as the Chanticleers defeated Radford University in Big South Conference men's soccer action. Coastal improves to 5-6-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Big South play, while the Highlanders fall to 4-8 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Coastal Carolina's Justin Stone took the ball just inside the 18-yard box before being brought down from behind by Radford's Adam Pahl. The foul, called by the linesman, was originally set outside the box, but the linesman corrected the call and a penalty kick was awarded. Whitmarsh blasted the ball into the bottom right corner past Radford's Diving keeper, Andrew Essey.

Radford had two high quality chances to score and both came off of the foot of leading scorer T.J. Rolfing. The first came at 47:13 when Rolfing's blast from 16 yards hit the crossbar and was cleared by Coastal's Tyler Hughes. The junior forward's second and best opportunity came in the 69th minute on a penalty kick. The ball connected with the crossbar and was smothered by Coastal keeper Andrew Paxton.

Coastal Carolina outshot Radford 10-6. Paxton, in his first home start of the season, posted five shutouts in recording his first shutout. Essey also had five saves for Radford.

The Chanticleers will take a week off before returning to action on October 27th when they host Big SOuth foe Liberty University at 1:00 p.m.
