Men’s Soccer Ties Davidson, 1-1

More Information:

Coastal’s freshman defenseman Patrick Robertson (Woodlands, Texas-Woodlands) scored his first career goal to give CCU (7-6-1 1-3 Big South) an early first half lead, but Davidson (4-7-1) rallied for a tie, 1-1, on Sunday evening, Oct. 17, in Greensboro, N.C.

Coastal for the first time in eight games scored first, when Robertson scored his first career goal off the feed from senior midfielder Randy Owen (Columbia, S.C.-Irmo (Francis Marion)) from five yards out within the games first five minutes (4:54).

The lead would hold up for most the first half, until Davidson’s senior defenseman Joe Bass took a pass from Mac Wilkie (37:19) to tie the game at one right before the half.

The game would remain this way through the entire second half and two overtimes. Freshman goalkeeper Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C.-Green Hope) would go the entire game for Coastal, only give up the one score in 110 minutes of play while registering five saves.

For the game Coastal matched up well with Davidson, only trailing 16-13 in shots, while leading 8-6 in shots on goal. CCU also held a slight advantage of 6-4 in corner kicks.

After the game was over, two Chanticleers were honored with places on the UNCG/adidas Classic All-Tournament Team. Senior midfielder Mubarike Chisoni (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe-Chegtu (Lindsey Wilson)) and fellow senior forward Boyzzz Khumalo (Soweto, South Africa-Bethlehem (Lindsey Wilson)) were both awarded with places on the team.

The tie by the Chants was its first since the 2002 season when it was tied three times. The 1992 season was the last time Coastal and Davidson played a game to a draw.

CCU will next take the pitch on Sat., Oct. 23, as it travels to Lexington, Va. to take on conference rival VMI at 11 a.m.
