CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Striker Ashton Bennett of the 10th-ranked Coastal Carolina men's soccer team has been named the Big South Conference Attacking Player of the Week for games played Oct. 8-14, the league announced on Tuesday.
The award is the second of the season for the senior and fourth conference Player of the Week plaudit for a Chanticleer this season. Bennett earned Attacking Player of the Week honors after the opening week of the season, while Scott Shewfelt and Uchenna Uzo have each garnered Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Clarendon, Jamaica, native put in four goals to lead the Chanticleers to a 2-0 record in Big South play last week. He got his week started with a pair of scores, including the game-winner, in Coastal Carolina's 3-1 win at Campbell on Oct. 10. Three days later at VMI, Bennett stayed hot as he found the back of the net twice in the 8-0 win over the Keydets. For his efforts, the preseason All-American was named to the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week.
After a somewhat slow start to the season for the speedy forward, Bennett has caught fire as of late. He has found the back of the net seven times in his last four outings, including a pair of goals in each of the last three games. Bennett currently ranks fourth in the NCAA in total goals with 11. He ranks 6th in total points (25), ninth in goals per game (0.79) and 11th in points per game (1.79).
In all, Bennett leads Coastal's attack that ranks first in the country in goals (38), assists (36) and total points (112).
Coastal (11-1-2, 6-0-0 Big South) will look to extend its 12-game unbeaten streak and 15-match regular season conference winning streak Wednesday night when Winthrop comes to the CCU Soccer Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Admission to the contest is free.
