CONWAY, S.C. Joseph Ngwenya connected on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to secure the 14th-ranked Coastal Carolina mens soccer teams 2-1 victory over Georgia State, Thursday, at CCU Soccer Field. Coastal advances to 9-2-0 on the season, and the Panthers drop to 7-4-1.
Jordie Hughes got the Chants off to a quick start 10 minutes into the match as he sent a ball from Mubarike Chisoni and Francis McCardle into the net, scoring his sixth goal of 2003. The score remained at 1-0 for the duration of the period, however, with Coastal taking several shots but never scoring.
GSU tied it up in the 73rd minute as Stephen Adams sent a free kick past Coastal keeper Mark Lenahan, but Ngwenyas PK would come six minutes later. The score marked the seniors 11th goal this season.
The Chanticleers outshot the Panthers 19-12, and GSU managed only three shots on goal during the 90 minutes as opposed to Coastals seven. Chris Mahaffey led GSU with six shots, and Hughes was Coastals team leader, trying for five shots.
J.B. Wood recorded five saves for the Panthers, and Lenahan grabbed two.
Coastal mens soccer is back in action this Sunday, Oct. 19, as it hosts Big South leader Liberty at 1 p.m.
