CONWAY, S.C.– The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team used two first half goals to down Liberty 2-1, in Big South Conference action here Friday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Field, Oct. 12. With the victory, CCU extends its winning streak to four games. Both teams entered the contest as the league's only unbeaten teams in conference play. Senior Kheli Dube (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Pumula (Lindsey Wilson)) scored both goals for the Chanticleers, including his third straight game-winner.
Despite being outshot 16-9, the Chants improve to 5-5-1 and 3-0-0 in league action, while the Flames fall to 7-8-2 and 2-1-0 in the Big South.
Dube, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, drained a bicycle kick off a cross from senior Robert Holstein (Middleburg, Fla./St. John's County (Queen's University of Charlotte)) and junior Djamel Bekka (Tulsa, Okla./Union) in the second minute. Dube followed with his eighth goal of the season after a shot by senior Kevin Van Den Berg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) hit the post in the 23rd minute. Liberty's Toby Lewis also connected on the rebound off a shot off the post for the Flames lone goal at 59:52. Liberty managed several late shots, including a shot on goal with two seconds remaining that freshman goalkeeper Matt Smith (Cape Canaveral, Fla./Merritt Island) stopped.
In his first career start, Smith recorded six saves, while the Flames Paul Gilbert turned away two.
The Chants return to the field Saturday, Oct. 20, for a nonconference match up with Davidson. Game time is set for 4 p.m., at Alumni Stadium in Davidso, N.C. The Flames will be in action Oct. 18 for a 4 p.m. contest at UNC Asheville.
