ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team recorded its second straight shutout with a 5-0 victory over UNC Asheville Wednesday afternoon at Greenfield Stadium. Senior Kheli Dube (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Pumula (Lindsey Wilson)) netted two goals and recorded an assist for the Chanticleers, while redshirt freshman Riley Phelps (Peach Tree, Ga./Starrs Mill) and freshman Ross Kelly (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) each recorded their first collegiate goal.

 

With the win the Chants improve to 3-5-1 and remain perfect in league action at 2-0, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-6-1 and 0-2 in the Big South.

 

Dube netted the contest’s first goal just minutes into the game with a header directly off a throw in from freshman Robbie McRight (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter) at the 2:46 mark. The contest remained 1-0 at half time.

 

Dube found Kelly in the 64th minute for the second goal of the game. Two goals in a span of less than three minutes extended CCU's lead to 4-0. Dube found the net, for the fourth time this season, at 73:54 with an assist from junior Wesley Kent (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill), while senior Kevin Van Den Berg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) scored at 76:28. The Chants added their final goal with 13 seconds remaining in the game after Phelps netted his first goal with an assist from Van Den Berg.

 

After posting a shutout against VMI, Sept. 29, redshirt freshman Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) recorded over 76 minutes of shutout action with two saves before freshman Matt Smith (Cape Canaveral, Fla./Merritt Island) finished the final 13:32 with two saves. Michael Pereira recorded three saves for the Bulldogs.

 

Coastal will return to the field, Saturday, Oct. 6, to host George Washington under the lights at the CCU Soccer Field in nonconference action. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
