CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Defender Alex Russell garnered Big South Choice Hotels Men’s Soccer Co-Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 28 after leading the Chanticleer defense to win the Big West Challenge and defeating #24 Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Sept. 21. The award was announced by the league today.

The South Elgin, Ill., native earned his third consecutive All-Tournament nomination after the tournament in Fullerton, Calif. as his defense held the opponents to just two goals on the weekend and nine shots on goal in both games.

The Chanticleers went 1-0-1 on the weekend, tying tournament host Cal State Fullerton, 1-1 on Friday, Sept. 25, and beating the NSCAA 24th ranked Cal State Northridge, 2-1.

Along with Russell, Gardner-Webb defender Jovan Ivanovich also earned the award this week.

The Chanticleers will start their conference play at home on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. against Liberty.
