Men's Soccer Tops VMI in 1-0 Thriller to Open Big South Play

CONWAY, S.C. – Despite playing a man down the final 40 minutes, the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team topped VMI in a 1-0 thriller to open Big South Conference play, here Saturday, Sept. 29, at the CCU Soccer Field. With the win, CCU improves its all-time series record to 8-0 versus the Keydets. 

The Chanticleers (2-5-1, 1-0) outshot VMI (4-3-1, 0-1) 11-10 in a game that had six yellow cards and one red card. 

In his first career start, freshman Robbie McRight (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter) connected on a header off a free kick by junior Djamel Bekka (Tulsa, Okla./Union) at 8:34 for the game's only goal. It was the fourth assist on the season for Bekka. 

Freshman Kelly Porter (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) received a red card just over five minutes into the second half, forcing the Chants to play a man down the remainder of the contest. 

Redshirt freshman Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) recorded three saves in his first career shutout. Brian Sowell made four saves for the Keydets. 

The Chants travel to Asheville, N.C., to square off with UNC Asheville in Big South action, Oct. 3. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
