More Information:

LEXINGTON, Va.- The Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team defeated VMI 3-2 in double overtime this afternoon, Sun., Sept. 28 in the Big South Conference opener for both squads.

Trailing 2-0 with 43 minutes left to play, the Chants (3-6, 1-0 Big South) needed some big plays to even up the score, and that is exactly what they got in the 68th minute, as Robert Hunter (Pawleys Island, S.C./Waccamaw (Furman)) buried a free kick for his third goal of the season to bring the Chants within a goal of tying the contest with 22 minutes remaining.

The Chants would get the equalizer that they were looking for less than four minutes later in the 72nd minute. Ross Kelly (Sugarland, Texas/Clements) took advantage of a Keydet defensive error on an assist from Hunter and knotted the contest up at 2-2 with 18:48 left to play in regulation.

Kelly had an opportunity to give the Chants the lead in the 76th minute as he was taken down inside the 18, but was turned away on the ensuing penalty shot by Keydet goalkeeper Brian Sowell. Less than four minutes later, VMI had an opportunity to capitalize on a penalty shot, but Zach Morgan’s attempt was stopped by Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) to keep the game knotted at 2-2.

The tally would remain all-square at 2-2 heading into overtime. The first overtime session went by uneventfully, but the second extra time proved to be golden for the Chants. Freshman Carlos Recinos (Houston, Texas/Cypress Falls) scored the game-winner for Coastal Carolina in the 105th minute on  a strike from 12 yards out that found the upper left corner, with the assist going to Riley Phelps (Charleston, S.C./Starrs Mill (Ga.) to give the Chants their third victory of the season

"I am extremely proud of how we played today," said a victorious Head Coach Shaun Docking. "Our younger players really played well, and they were the ones that won the game for us."

The Chants will next be in action on Sat., Oct. 4 as they travel to Liberty to take on the Flames on Sun., Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.
