Coastal Carolina got on the board early as Mike Littlefield scored on a pass from John DeVae to put the Chanticleers up 1-0 just a little over five minutes into the game. The score would remain the same until the 36-minute mark, when Elon sophomore Paul Bellacqua was awarded a penalty kick. Bellacqua's goal, which was his team leading seventh on the season, tied the game up 1-1 going into halftime.
The Phoenix took the lead soon after the start of the second period when freshman forward Tim Sullivan booted a ball into the back of the net to put Elon up 2-1. But the Elon lead didn't last for long as CCU's Joseph Ngwenya took charge of the Chanticleer offense.
Nearly seven minutes after Sullivan's goal, Ngwenya answered with a shot of his own on a pass from Thomas Rutter to tie the game up at two. The game stayed tied for almost twenty minutes, but Ngwenya wasn't finished yet. At the 76:50 mark Ngwenya scored again, this time on a cross from Littlefield to put the Chanticleers ahead by one.
Ngwenya secured the victory for Coastal Carolina and a hat trick for himself when he broke away from the flocks and worked his way across field and around Elon goalie Kyle Ostendorf to score his third goal of the evening and put CCU up 4-2. Coastal would go on to keep its lead and its undefeated record.
CCU returns to action on Saturday October 5 against Radford. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Radford.
