The Coastal Carolina (6-1, 1-1) mens soccer saw its 17 game home winning streak snapped as they lost for the first time this season to Birmingham-Southern (4-3, 1-1), 1-0 on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 26 at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
The first half was scoreless as both teams were feeling each other out for the right opportunity.
That opportunity would present itself in the second half to the Panthers senior forward Karim Dietz, as he took a cross from fellow senior Nick Barcelona in front of the Coastal net and beat freshman Aaron Weant ( Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope) to the right corner for what would be the only goal of the afternoon at 57:59.
Opportunity would present itself several times for CCU in the second half as Jordie Hughes (Victoria, Brisitsh Columbia-Spectrum) took a feed from Boyzzz Khumalo (Soweto, South Africa/Bethlehem (Lindsey Wilson)) in front of the Panther keeper with about 25 minutes left in the game, but unfortunately the shot ended up too high.
Lachlan Cahill (Kiama, Australia-Kiama) would get an opportunity from 20 yards out, that went wide right with about 14 minutes left in the contest as the contest stayed 1-0 Birmingham.
The Chanticleers final hope was a last second shot by Khumalo, from the left side, that would hook wide right as Birmingham-Southern defeated Coastal for the first time in school history
For the game the Chants outshot the Panthers 16-7, but were whistled for 14 fouls and 14 offsides penalties.
The mens soccer team will next take the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 28, as the Chants welcome UNC Asheville to CCU Soccer Stadium for a 4 p.m., match.
