CONWAY, S.C.– Despite 12 saves by redshirt freshman Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church), the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team fell to Cal State Fullerton 2-1 in overtime here Sunday, Sept. 23, at the CCU Soccer Field. With the loss, the Chanticleers fall to 1-5-1, while the Titans improve to 4-3 on the season.
CCU posted the first goal of the game after junior Djamel Bekka (Tulsa, Okla./Union) found senior Kheli Dube (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Pumula (Lindsey Wilson)) for a near post goal in the top right corner at the 48th minute. The Chants held the lead until an own goal put Cal State Fullerton on the board during the 62nd minute. The ball bounced off a CCU defender into their own goal off a Titan cross. The contest remained knotted until Skyler Thuresson drained a shot from 15 yards out to end the contest three minutes into overtime.
Latham's 12 saves ranks in a tie with Paul Rosciani (1994) and Kristjan Augustsson (1987) as the fourth most by a Chant goalkeeper in a single game. Joe Gallagher holds the school record with 21 set during the school's inaugural season in 1978.
The Titans outshot the Chants 30-7 and 14-3 in shots-on-goal. Tyler Andrews recorded two saves between the posts for Cal State Fullerton.
Coastal will kickoff Big South Conference action hosting VMI, Saturday, Sept. 29, at the CCU Soccer Field. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
