CONWAY, SC- The Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team was shutout by the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University 4-0 this afternoon, Sun., Sept. 21 at Coastal Carolina University Soccer Stadium.
Coastal Carolina struggled to generate opportunities throughout the match, but had its most promising chance in the 26th minute, as Carlos Recinos (Houston, Texas/Cypress Ridge) sent a free kick from 26 yards out that freshman Hunter Thames (Frederick, Md./Urbana) headed just wide of the net.
In the first half, the Rams out shot the Chants by a 4-to-2 margin, and took a 2-0 advantage heading into the second frame.
The Rams added a third tally early in the second half in the 47th minute, as Dos Santos split two Chant defenders, and served a ball to Jake Van Yahres to beat substitute goalkeeper Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church).
Latham made several challenging stops in the 57th minute, as Van Yehres fired two shots that Latham turned away. However, the Chants were unable to clear their defensive end, and David Rosenbaum put home the third rebound of the sequence to give VCU its fourth tally of the contest, and stretched the lead to an insurmountable 4-0.
The Chants controlled the majority of the final 28 minutes, with Levi Curnutte (
VCU goalkeepers Andrew Dykstra and Ryan MacArthur made a combined five saves in the joint shutout, while Smith and Latham made seven stops in the defeat.
The Chants will hit the road for the next three contests to open up Big South Conference play, taking on VMI on Sept. 28 at , followed by
