Men's Soccer Blanked by UNC Wilmington, 3-0
More Information: CONWAY, S.C.-The Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team (2-5) was shutout by UNC Wilmington (3-4), 3-0, in a non-conference match up tonight, Wed., Sept. 17 at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium.
UNC Wilmington had the majority of the opportunities early on in the contest, most notably in the 13th minute as an Allen Lomax free kick for 20 yards out was turned away by a sprawling Chanticleer goalkeeper Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church). Six minutes later, Latham turned away another Seahawk free kick, this time coming off the foot of Shawn Guderian.
The first of three tallies for UNCW came in the 21st minute, as Kirk Hudgins intercepted a pass in the midfield, and sent a through ball that found the foot of Devan Carroll for a breakaway goal.
The Chants had their fair share of chances in the first half, as Robert Hunter (Pawleys Island, S.C./Waccamaw (Furman)) sent a cross from 20 yards out off a set piece that freshman Hunter Thames (Frederick, Md./Urbana) headed cleanly, but sent it sailing the crossbar.
Down 1-0 with 2:37 left in the first half, the Chants suffered what proved to be an insurmountable setback, as sophomore Alex Russell (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) was issued his second caution of the game, resulting in a red card, and forced the Chants to play a man down trailing 1-0 for the duration of the contest.
Coastal Carolina nearly knotted things up a minute into the second frame, as Riley Phelps (Charleston, S.C./Starrs Mill (Ga.) collected a loose ball inside the UNCW 18, but sent his attempt just wide of the net.
From then on, it was all Seahawks, as an outmanned Chant squad struggled offensively playing with 10 men, and surrendered two additional goals, both coming off the foot of Guderian. The first goal came in the 50th minute off a corner kick from Daniel Roberts, and the second in the 57th minute on an assist from Caito Heiland, and stretched the Seahawk lead to 3-0.
On the match, UNCW out shot the Chants by a 16-to-10 margin.
The squad returns to action Sun., Sept. 21 to host Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m., from the Coastal Carolina University Soccer Stadium.
