CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Coastal Carolina's Shawn McLaws earned Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week ending Sept. 15, the conference office announced on Monday.
McLaws, a junior from Edmond, Okla., anchored Coastal Carolina's defensive efforts in wins against South Carolina 3-1, and No. 15 UNC Greensboro, 4-2. McLaws played three positions over the course of the two games - holding defensive midfielder, center back and right back. He transitioned seamlessly between the trio of the positions "on the fly" without allowing any of his marks to attempt a shot on frame. The honor is his first Big South Defensive Player of the Week nod of his career.
McLaws has been a fixture along the Chanticleers' backline since his arrival in Conway. To date, he has been in Coastal's starting 11 in 45 straight games dating back to his freshman season of 2010. McLaws has recorded 11 assists in his Coastal career and earned TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week plaudits last season for the week ending Oct. 22.
McLaws and the Chanticleers put their 19-game Big South regular season winning streak on the line on Tuesday, facing off against Presbyterian College. Kickoff from Clinton, S.C., is scheduled for 6 p.m.
