Men's Soccer Falls to Davidson 2-1

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina men’s socer team fell to a 4-2-1 record after a 2-1 loss to Davidson (4-3-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

This fast-paced game saw scoring action early when in just the second minute of the game Davidson’s Marco Antunez scored the first goal of the contest, shooting it past goalkeeper Jeremy Wolfgang (Reading, Pa./Wilson) into the right corner of the net putting the Wildcats on top 1-0.

The Chanticleers tied the game 1-1 in the 25th minute after Kevin Van Den Berg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) kicked a cross that was deflected by the Davidson goalkeeper Ben Ashton, then collected by Mhkeli Dube (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Pumula (Lindsey Wilson) who passed it to Luke Ibbetson (York, England/Millthrope (Lander University) for his sixth goal on the season.

This physical game had total of 34 fouls called and didn’t see another goal until the 70th minute when Davidson’s Cass Baltz put it past the posts. The Chants were out-shot by the Wildcats 15-8 with eight of them on goal to Davidson’s 10.

At goalkeeper for the Chants was Wolfgang for the first-half and Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope) in the second who had three and five saves respectively.

"We took on a very good Davidson team tonight, head coach Shaun Docking said. "This was a very entertaining game with good chances taken by both teams. As a team, we are still finding our way in terms of playing soccer and connecting with eachother on the field. It is early in the season, but we need to get better at connecting with eachother and continue to work hard."

The team will continue the action when they take on UNC Wilmington on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in Conway, S.C.
