Men's Soccer Gets 2-1 Overtime Victory Over Charlotte at UNCW Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Classic

WILMINGTON, N.C.-The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team got a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the Charlotte 49ers Fri. Sept. 12 in the opening contest of the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Classic.
The play of the game was a game-winning overtime goal by Robert Hunter (Waccamaw, S.C./Pawleys Island (Furman)), as his "Golden Goal" came 55 seconds into the first overtime. Hunter scored off a free kick from well outside the 18-yard box. The junior has now has at least one point in four of the Chanticleers’ first five contests.
The game was scoreless going into the half, but redshirt sophomore Riley Phelps (Charleston, S.C./Starrs Mill (Ga.)) broke the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute off a throw-in assist from sophomore Ross Kelly (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements). The goal was Phelps' second of the season.
Coastal Carolina held onto the 1-0 lead until the 82nd minute, as 49er midfielder Adam Gross put home a lost ball off a corner kick to beat Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) to even up the score at 1-1. Latham made two saves on the contest.
"It was certainly a good win for young group that has worked hard throughout the preseason," exclaimed a proud Head Coach Shaun Docking. "Their efforts were certainly rewarded in tonight's victory."
The 49ers entered the contest as the No. 2 ranked squad in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Middle Atlantic Region Poll and also had received votes in the national poll this week.
The Chants will next be in action on Sun. Sept. 14 in game two of the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Classic against the Dayton Flyers, starting at 1 p.m.
