GREENVILLE, S.C. The Coastal Carolina mens soccer team battled Gardner-Webb to a 1-1 tie Sunday Sept. 10 at the 2006 Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational in a physical match.
After a scoreless first first half, the Chanticleers (4-1-1) went on top early in the second half using a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead. Patrick Robertson (Woodsland, Texas,/Woodsland) converted on an eight-yard header from Djamel Bekka (Tulsa, Okla./Union) at the 50:19 mark.
Gardner-Webb pulled even in the 62nd minute with Chris Salvaggione finding the back of the net off an assist from Jarrett Jackson bringing the score to a 1-1 tie.
In this physical match there was a total of 51 fouls called, 34 combined shots credited with only five shots on goal by the Chants and six on goal for Gardner-Webb.
Goalkeeper Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope) came up with a huge save in the 89th minute stopping the GWU Runnin Bulldogs from scoring off a corner kick in the last minute forcing the game to go into overtime.
Neither team was able to get the ball through the posts in the overtime bout, forcing the game to end in a draw.
The Chants will return home on Wednesday, Sept. 13, to take on Davidson at 7 p.m. in Conway, S.C. at the CCU Soccer Field.
