GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team (1-2-1) earned its first victory of the 2007 season Sept. 9 with a 4-0 win over Presbyterian (0-5) on the final day of the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
Coastal had a 5-2 shot advantage in the first half, and connected on two of those strikes. Senior Kevin Van Den Berg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) opened the scoring at 35:09, taking advantage of a Presbyterian giveaway and beating Blue Hose goalkeeper Mark Owens for his first goal of the season. It wouldn’t take long for Van Den Berg’s second goal of the year, as his header at 38:51 from senior Lachlan Cahill (Kiama, Australia/Kiama) made it 2-0 Coastal. Coastal would hold the two-goal advantage until the 79th minute, when freshman Kelly Porter (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) scored his third goal of the season and second of the weekend as his header off a cross came on assists from senior Robert Holstein (Middleburg, Fla./St. John’s County (Queens)) and Cahill. The scoring would conclude at 81:12 as Cahill’s penalty kick was successful. It was his second goal of the year. Coastal outshot Presbyterian 14-8 for the game and had a 7-1 corner-kick advantage. Both teams had 21 fouls for the game. Senior Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope) played 81 minutes in goal to earn the win. Redshirt freshman Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) stopped a shot in the final 8:48. A trio of freshmen were named to the All-Tournament Team. Porter, Ross Kelly (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) and Matt Schroeder (Parker, Colo/Ponderosa) were selected to the team after the Furman/Jacksonville game. Coastal will participate in the UNCW/Jameson Inn Soccer Classic Friday, Sept. 14. The Chanticleers face host UNC Wilmington starting at 7:30 p.m.
