Men's Soccer Gets 5-3 Win Over Stetson

GREENVILLE, SC The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team defeated Stetson, 5-3, Friday, Sept. 8 in Game One of the Diadora/Spinx Invitational in Greenville, S.C. The Chanticleers advanced to 4-1 on the season with their fourth straight win, while the Hatters fell to 1-4.   The first goal of the contest was set up by Coastal's steady early attack on the Stetson end of the field, resulting in a corner kick. Junior Robert Holstein (Middleburg, Fla./St.John's County/Queen's Univ.-Charlotte) drove the corner ball across the box, where junior Patrick Robertson (Woodsland, Texas/Woodsland) headed the ball back to the six-yard box. Junior Kevin Van Den Berg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) then scored off his own header, giving Coastal a 1-0 lead at 18:16 of the opening period.            The Chanticleers went up 2-0 in the 37th minute, as redshirt freshman Tim Shaw (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood) collected a header flick from Van Den Berg off Holstein's free kick and deposited it past Stetson keeper Alessand Barcherini. CCU stretched the lead to three, again from the foot of Shaw. This time, sophomore Travis Mogilski (Wake Forest, N.C./Wakefield) put a quality cross to Shaw, and he finished it to give the Chants a 3-0 lead with less than two minutes to play in the first half.           Early in the second half, the Chants gave up back-to-back goals by Tanner Wolfe for the Hatters in the first 18 minutes of the half to cut Coastal's lead to 3-2.            Junior Aaron Weant (Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope) then entered the game for his first action of the season and made an impact immediately. On his first touch of the year, Weant took a back pass from Robertson and drove the ball to Shaw on the left side of the Stetson penalty box. Shaw then got the bouncing ball to senior Luke Ibbetson (York, England, Millthorpe), who chipped the ball over Stetson's keeper for his fifth of the season, extending Coastal's lead back to two at 4-2 exactly three minutes after SU's previous goal. Weant earned the assist on the play, making it the first-ever assist by a goalkeeper in the history of the Coastal Carolina men's soccer program.           CCU extended the lead again to three less than eight minutes later in the 73rd minute. Ibbetson and Van Den Berg connected, with Van Den Berg going low from the left side of the box to score his second goal on the game and a 5-3 Chanticleer lead.           Stetson scored their third and final goal on the game in the 87th minute of the game, when Sean Marshall got through the CCU defense on a cross and headed it past Weant for the final 5-3 margin.           Coastal and Stetson each had 11 shots in the match, with CCU putting seven of them on goal. Senior Jeremy Wolfgang (Reading, Pa./Wilson) got the victory in the start, playing the first 45 minutes and making CCU's only save of the game.             The Chants will play their final game of the Invitational Sunday, Sept. 10 at 11:30 a.m., taking on Gardner-Webb, who fell 1-0 to host Furman Friday night.
