CONWAY,S.C. -- Sophomore Mike Littlefield (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) scored two goals including the game winner, as Coastal Carolina defeated Mercer, 3-1 in the final game of the 2002 CCU/Adidas Invitational played today at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
Littlefield scored his first goal of the match at the 20:35 mark off a feed from Thomas Rutter. Littlefield would score his second goal at the 69:31 mark off a header, from a cross by Joseph Ngwenya.
Mercer would narrow the Chanticleer margin to 2-1, when Ramiro Canovas's shot was mis-played by CCU keeper Aaron Sauders and trickled in the goal. CCU (3-0-1) would add on another goal at the 86:29 mark when Ngwenya took a feed from Mubarike Chisoni and squeezed it in the right corner of the goal.
In game one today, Charleston Southern's Itayi Pondwa scored twice to help CSU to a 3-2 win over IPFW. Drew Zeigler also record a goal for the Bucs.
Littlefield, who scored three goals and recorded one assist for the tournament, was named tournament MVP. Rutter, along with Chris Moore and Sanders were named to the all-tournament team.
"I'm very pleased how well we play defensively," said CCU Head Coach Shaun Docking. " We beat a good Mercer team who was ready to play tonight. I was pleased on how well we moved the ball around when we got possession."
