Freshman goalkeeper Bradley Bugg earned his first career win and shutout |
Sept. 6, 2009
Senior James Stapleton scored the lone goal in the Coastal Carolina University men's soccer team's 1-0 win over St. Francis (NY) on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1:00 p.m. The win helped the Chanticleers earn second place in the Coastal Carolina University/adidas Invitational and was the first win of the 2009 season for Coastal Carolina (1-1-1).
The first half was back and forth between the two teams, producing some close calls on both ends of the pitch. Within the first 15 minutes Chanticleers sophomore Cyprian Hedrick put the ball on net, but was saved by St. Francis goaltender Chris Antonino. Shortly after, the Terriers applied pressure on freshman goalkeeper Bradley Bugg with a shot from Semso Nikocevic. Bugg made one save in the first half, while Antonino made two in the first half.
The second half continued with the same pressure from both sides, until Stapleton scored from the left corner 8:58 into the half. The goal was Stapleton's second-consecutive goal and first career game-winner as a Chanticleer.
The Chanticleer defense held strong for the rest of the game, allowing Bugg to only see one shot on goal and holding the Terriers five strikes. The Chanticleers out shot the Terriers 9-7 and had a 4-2 shot-on-goal advantage.
With the win, Bugg earned his first career victory and shutout.
Three Chanticleers were garnered with All-Tournament selections; defenders Alex Russell and Levi Curnutte, and forward Riley Phelps.
The Chanticleers will return to action next week in the Davidson/adidas Invitational at Davidson N.C., to take on Georgetown on Friday Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. and Davidson on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 3:15 p.m.
