Scott Shewfelt Named Big South Defensive Player of the Week

Shewfelt is the second Chanticleer to earn Big South Player of the Week honors this season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Scott Shewfelt has been named the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for games played Aug. 27-Sept. 2, the league announced on Tuesday.

Shewfelt is the first Chanticleer to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors this season and the second overall Chant to garner league recognition as Ashton Bennett was named the Attacking Player of the Week for games played through Aug. 26.

Shewfelt, a junior from London, Ontario, turned away seven shots in 127:13 minutes of action to help the No. 12 Chanticleers to a 1-0-1 record last week. At Ohio State on Aug. 31, he posted three saves in 21 minutes of action. After a Coastal Carolina red card, Shewfelt came in and turned away a Buckeye penalty kick. He would go on to collect two more saves during the overtimes as Coastal battled Ohio State to the 1-1 draw. Against Wright State on Sept. 2, Shewfelt posted 105:59 of shutout soccer with four saves as Coastal Carolina won, 1-0.

The No. 12 Chanticleers host the Coastal Carolina University Invitational from Friday, Sept. 7 through Sunday, Sept. 9. Coastal will square off against Florida Atlantic on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Bowling Green on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
