WILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior forward Justin Schatz scored the deciding goal at 75:09 to give Aidan Heaney his first win as coach of UNC Wilmington's team as the Seahawks edged Coastal Carolina, 2-1, in men's college soccer action Monday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The victory evened UNCW's record at 1-1 on the season, while Coastal Carolina dipped to 0-2.
After Coastal tied the score at 1-1 at 73:12 on a goal by sophomore striker Joseph Ngwenya, the Seahawks answered less than two minutes later and made the goal stand up to avenge a 6-0 loss to the Chanticleers last season in Conway, S.C.
Senior midfielder Tommy Miller broke through the middle, dropped the ball off to Schatz and the Knightdale, N.C., product drilled the game-winner past Coastal goalkeeper Eric Sullivan.
UNCW took a 1-0 lead into intermission on an early tally by senior forward Nikola Milivojevic. Jason Small launched a corner kick and Miller headed the ball toward the goal. Milivojevic then knocked the rebound into the left corner of the net for an early advantage.
The contest appeared to be headed toward overtime after Ngwenya scored an unassisted goal with 16:48 left to play before Schatz connected on the second goal of the night. Coastal Carolina outshot UNCW, 18-9, on the night. Sullivan had four saves, while UNCW goalie Bill Mills collected seven.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday with a 7 p.m. home match against High Point. The Chanticleers meet Jacksonville on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the CCU/Option One Adidas Invitational.
