Men’s Soccer Wins First Game of Season, 6-0, Over Northeastern

CONWAY, S.C.- Senior Joseph Kawbe (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Sakubva (Lindsey Wilson) had a goal and an assist as a balanced attack by Coastal Carolina’s men’s soccer team (1-0) defeated Northeastern (0-1), 6-0, on the first day of the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational.

Coastal Carolina got on the board early as senior Craig Reed (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) took the feed from sophomore Daniel O’Brien (Shoreview, Minn./Moundsview) and beat the Northeastern goalkeeper off the left corner of the goal box from 18 yards out (11:31).

CCU scored its second goal of the evening, as sophomore Patrick Robertson (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) took the feed from junior Bobby Zimmer (Sugarland, Texas/Clements) indirectly off a corner kick (31:18).

The game stayed this way until after the break when senior Peter Louis (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) took a through ball from Kabwe for the first goal of the second half, making the score 3-0 (48:38).

Kabwe scored the next Chanticleers goal off a corner kick from the leftside (52:47), to put the game out of reach at 4-0.

Freshman Brad Stisser (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) headed a ball in from 30 yards out (54:14) off the sophomore Lachlan Cahill (Kiama, Australia/Kiama) pass to make the score 5-0 Coastal.

Sophomore Dominic Rossi (Kellyville, Australia/Oakhill College (Macquarie)) finished off the scoring unassisted off a stolen pass when the Northeastern defender was unable to clear the ball (59:33).

The win went to sophomore Ryan Nowak (Katy, Texas/Katy (UNC-Greensboro), his first in a Coastal uniform.

For the game Coastal outshot the Huskies 22-5 including 15-2 on goal. The Chants held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In the first game of the afternoon Binghamton and Furman ended in a 1-1 tie in double overtime, as Binghamton’s Kyle Antos headed a ball in from just outside the goalkeeper’s box to force the game into overtime with eight seconds left in regulation.

Coastal’s men’s soccer team will continue its play in the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational against Binghamton on Saturday, Sept. 3rd at 7:30 p.m. The first game of the afternoon will involve Furman battling against Northeastern at 5:00 p.m. All games will be played at CCU Soccer Field.
