CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina University men's soccer team defeated the Elon Phoenix in an exhibition match 3-0 Aug. 24 at Coastal Carolina University Soccer Stadium in the squad's second and final preseason exhibition match.
The Chanticleers controlled the tempo of the contest in the first half and had several promising opportunities in the opening 20 minutes. It was senior Travis Mogilski (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) that opened up the scoring for the Chants 25 minutes in as freshman Carlos Recinos (Houston, Texas/Cypress Ridge) beat two defenders and sent a cross that found Mogilski at the six-yard box. The senior then tucked a shot far post, beating Elon goalkeeper Clint Irwin to score Coastal Carolina's first goal of the preseason.
Matt Smith (Cape Canaveral, Fla./Merritt Island) got the nod in goal and stopped several Elon chances, the most dangerous being a shot off the foot of Elon's Erfan Imeni from 20 yards out at the 37 minute mark. Smith managed get his fingertips on the shot, as the ball rang off the post, keeping the score at 1-0.
The second frame was much of the same, as the Chants continued to control possession. Just over 15 minutes into the half, Matt Schroeder (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) headed a ball that found the foot of Recinos, and the freshman beat an Elon defender and tucked in the far post to stretch Coastal Carolina's lead to 2-0.
The Chants final tally came off a free kick from 30 yards out by Robert Hunter (Pawleys Island, S.C./Furman) that found the head of a leaping Ross Kelly (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) to seal the 3-0 victory.
With preseason exhibitions out of the way, the Chants will open their 2008 regular season by hosting the annual Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational on Aug. 29-30. The Chants will take on Florida Atlantic Friday and Longwood on Saturday. Both contests are slated for 7 p.m. starts.
