CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team, ranked No. 13 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll, will host in-state rival Clemson on Sunday at 1 p.m. The exhibition match will serve as the final regular season tune-ups for both teams.
The Chanticleers went 20-3-2 last fall en route to advancing to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. Coastal's roster features seven returning starters, including preseason All-American selection Pedro Ribeiro and veteran midfielder Justin Portillo, nine returning letter winners and 18 newcomers. The Chants are 0-1 in exhibition play this season, falling 1-0 at Old Dominion on Wednesday.
Clemson posted an overall record of 6-9-5 in 2012, including a 3-2-4 mark in the rugged Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tigers return two of their top three scorers and their leader in assists from a year ago. Clemson is 1-0 in preseason play this season, rolling to a 3-nil victory over Wofford on Thursday.
Coastal began preseason camp two weeks ago and continues to prepare for its regular-season opener at No. 18 Wake Forest on Aug. 30 as part of the Carolina Nike Classic. The Chants will also play at No. 4 North Carolina on Sept. 1 in its final match of the Carolina Nike Classic.
