The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team has been selected to finish second by the conference head coaches, in the Big South Conference Preseason Poll, announced by the league.
The Chanticleers earned two first place votes and 67 points to only follow defending conference champion Winthrop who had five first place votes and 71 points. The Chanticleers fell last year to Winthrop 4-3 in a double-overtime loss in the Big South Championship.
"I think once again Winthrop is the team to beat, as they have a lot of players returning," Head Coach Shaun Docking said. "How close the preseason voting is for all of the teams this year shows how tough the teams are in the conference."
Ranking third in the poll was High Point two first place votes and 63 points, and selected fourth is Liberty with 61 points. Tied for fifth place are Radford and Gardner-Webb with 38.5 points. And rounding out the poll are UNC Asheville (32), VMI (21) and Presbyterian (14).
The Chants will take on Campbell, Saturday, Aug. 22 in the final exhibition of the preseason. The official start of the 2009 season will begin Sept. 1 at the College of Charleston at 7:00 p.m.
