BUIES CREEK, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team fell to the Campbell Camels 4-0 tonight, Aug. 18 in an exhibition match at Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Chanticleers held the Fighting Camels in check throughout the first half, but faltered early on in the second frame, allowing three goals in the first 16:05.
Josue Soto got the scoring going for Campbell, capitalizing on a penalty kick opportunity in the 48th minute. The Camels would strike again in the 59th minute, taking a 2-0 lead on an own goal that deflected off the head of Coastal Carolina defender Robbie McRight (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter). Less than three minutes later, Campbell’s Richard Jata beat Coastal Carolina keeper Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church), running the tally to 3-0. Campbell’s last strike of the game came off the foot of Kyle Proctor in the 87th minute.
Redshirt sophomore Phillip Latham (Annandale, Va./Falls Church), got the starting nod in net, and was relieved by Eric Geniesse nearly five minutes after surrendering the third goal. Both goalkeepers turned away three shots for the Chants.
Freshman Carlos Recinos (Houston, Texas/Cypress Ridge) had three shots on goal, while another new face, Robert Hunter (Downingtown, Pa./Furman), tallied two shots on net.
The Chants will play host to Elon on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. at Coastal Carolina Soccer Field in the second exhibition contest of the season.
