Aug. 15, 2012
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team has been ranked 10th by College Soccer News in the publication's preseason NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Poll.
In addition to the No. 10 ranking by College Soccer News, the Chants have received the No. 17 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll.
Earlier this week, Coastal was voted first in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll, as voted by the league's head men's soccer coaches. In the same vote rising senior Ashton Bennett was voted as the league's Preseason Attacking Player of the Year after capturing the honor following the regular season last year. Also, reigning conference Freshman of the Year Kjartan Sigurdsson was selected as the league's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Furthermore, on Monday Bennett and fellow 2011 All-American Pedro Ribeiro were named to the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List for the 2012 season. The Hermann Trophy is considered to be the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer.
The Chants travel to Cary, N.C., to take on consensus preseason No. 1 and defending national champions North Carolina in rematch of the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, which the Tar Heels won 3-2, for an exhibition game on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 3 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park. The squad will open the regular season six days later on Friday, Aug. 24 as hosts to Big South Conference newcomer Longwood at 3 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Field.
What College Soccer News said about the Chanticleers:
"What's the difference between the traditional superpowers of college soccer and Coastal Carolina? We'll find out this season and the answer could be nothing. Few teams in the country can run and gun with Shaun Docking's Chanticleers who were 18-4-0 overall last year and led the NCAA in scoring with a total of sixty-six goals. Senior All-American forward Ashton Bennett (23g, 7a) returns along with junior All-American midfielder Pedro Ribeiro (9g, 8a) and Justin Portillo (4g, 4a) and sophomore linkman Ricky Garbanzo (6g, 7a). Sophomores Kjartan Sigurdsson and Henrik Robstad will anchor the backline."
