CONWAY, SC Coastal Carolina University's Thomas Rutter has been selected to the Great Britain University National Team which will compete from August 21-31 at the 2001 World University Games in Beijing, China.
Rutter, a native of Stroud, England, will be a midfielder on the squad which is currently practicing in England. The team will depart for Hong Kong on August 8th and then travel to Beijing on August 17 for final preparations for their first match on August 21.
At Coastal Carolina, Rutter earned Big South All-Conference honors in 2000 as the Chanticleers' team captain. He placed second on the team with six assists and scored a pair of goals as a midfielder. Rutter earned Big South Rookie of the Year honors and Second Team All-Conference in 1999 when he scored eight goals and added six assists as a freshman.
Great Britain has been grouped with Nigeria, Mexico and host China for the opening round. The venue for soccer at the 2001 World University Games will be the 60,000-seat Beijing Workers Stadium. A capacity crowd is expected for China's match against Great Britain.
The World University Games is the second largest multi-sport games in the world second only to the Olympics. Rutter will be one of over 7,000 athletes from around the world competing in Beijing.
