CONWAY, SC -- The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team released its 2006 schedule, head coach Shaun Docking announced today (July 28). The schedule for the defending Big South Conference champion Chanticleers includes five teams that played in the 2005 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
"This will definitely be a challenging schedule for us this year," Docking said. "There are several teams on it that were in the NCAAs last year and several others that will be much improved. The Big South continues to get better and better, so we feel those non-conference challenges will get us prepared for the rigors of the league slate. Being the defending champions, we know we will be targeted so we have to be at our best to make another run at the NCAA Championship."
Coastal will open its 2006 season with a pair of exhibition games against NCAA participants, playing at Duke, Aug. 13, and hosting South Carolina, Aug. 21. CCU will then start its regular season with a two-game swing through southeast Michigan, taking on Oakland, Aug. 25, and Michigan, Aug. 27.
The Chants then return home to host the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational, taking on Bowling Green, Sept. 1, and Richmond, Sept. 3. Coastal then plays its only other regular season tournament the following weekend at the Furman/Diadora Classic, Sept. 8 and 10. There, CCU will take on 2005 NCAA participant Stetson and Gardner-Webb, respectively.
Home games against Davidson, Sept 13, and UNC Wilmington, Sept. 15, lead up to the Big South opener at Liberty Sept. 19. CCU will then head to Greensboro to take on nationally-ranked and defending Southern Conference champion UNC Greensboro, Sept. 22.
After a home game against UNC Asheville, Sept. 26, Coastal will have its longest road swing of the season, playing the first of four consecutive road games on Sept. 29 at Wake Forest, another NCAA squad from a year ago. The Chanticleers then will travel to College of Charleston, Oct. 13, before heading to the state of Virginia to take on league-rivals Radford, Oct. 7, and VMI, Oct. 14.
CCU then wraps up the regular season with three consecutive home games, all of them in conference play. Coastal hosts Birmingham-Southern (Oct. 21), Winthrop (Oct. 23) and High Point (Oct. 28) to complete the schedule. That weekend will have a major bearing on the seedings for the 2006 Big South Conference Tournament, being held Nov. 2-5 in Radford, Va.
The Chanticleers are coming off their fifth consecutive NCAA appearance last year, having posted an 11-9-1 record overall, including 5-2 in the Big South, and winning their third straight Big South Tournament title.
