CONWAY, S.C. Coastal Carolina head men's soccer coach Shaun Docking announced the 2003 mens soccer schedule today, June 10. The schedule is highlighted by five schools who participated in the 2002 NCAA Men's College Cup.
"We are very excited about the challenge of a new season and a very tought schedule," Docking said. "We play five teams that made the NCAA tournament, including early home matches with UNC Greensboro and Davidson. It promises to be one of the toughest schedule's in the program's history."
Coastal will begin the preseason, Aug. 23, with an exhibition match at Wake Forest. CCU will also play an exhibition match against local rival Francis Marion, Aug. 25, at CCU Soccer Stadium.
Coastal kicks off the regular season at home with matches against Southern Conference powers UNC Greensboro, Aug. 30, and Davidson, Sept. 2, before heading to Florida Atlantic, Sept. 6, for the second ever meeting with the Owls. The Chanticleers then travel to Richmond, Va, to take part in the UR/Nike Challenge Cup. There, the Chants will square off against Richmond, Sept. 12, who received an at-large bid to last year's NCAA Men's College Cup, and Duquesne, Sept. 13.
Coastal will then travel to Peoria, Ill., to take part in the Inaugural Bradley Classic. CCU will take on Cornell, Sept. 19, and then host Bradley, Sept. 21. The Braves, who lost in the championship game of the Missouri Valley Tournament, received an at-large bid to last year's NCAA Men's College Cup.
Coastal rounds out the month of September with an appearance at the Clemson Invitational. The first night, CCU will take on Southern Conference champion and NCAA Men's College Cup participant, Furman, Sept. 26, then on the final day of the tournament the Chants will square off against Clemson, Sept. 28, in a rematch of last year's second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Five home dates highlight the month of October, including matches against Big South Champion Winthrop, Oct. 8 and the Big South's newest member, VMI, Oct. 11.
The 2003 Big South Conference Tournament is scheduled from November 12-16 in Radford, Va.
Coastal returns seven starters, including the nation's leading goal scorer, Joseph Ngewnya, from last season's 19-3-2 team that finished the season ranked #21 in the nation by the collegesoccernews.com and #25 by the NSCAA.
