PHILADELPHIA - Coastal Carolina midfielder Pedro Ribeiro, a 2011 and 2013 NSCAA All-American, was selected by Philadelphia Union with the 15th overall pick during the 2014 Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Thursday afternoon.

The 6-foot-4, 208 pound midfielder will join fellow Union SuperDraft first round selection Andre Blake (GK | UConn) and his new teammates for the start of preseason training at the end of the month. Philadelphia finished the 2013 campaign with a 12-12-10 overall record, earning 46 points in the MLS standings.

Ribeiro, who was ranked as one of the top attacking midfielders entering the draft by the analysts at MLSsoccer.com, turned in a stellar effort at the MLS Combine. The Brazilian displayed his acumen with the ball at his feet and scored a goal in his third and final Combine match.

Ribeiro is the ninth Chanticleer to be drafted by an MLS club since 2004 and fourth in as many seasons. Forward Ashton Bennett was the 20th overall selection by Toronto FC in last season's Supplemental Draft, while center back Cyprian Hedrick was the 30th overall selection by Sporting Kansas City in 2012 SuperDraft and Joe Anderson, a forward, was taken first overall by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 2010 Supplemental Draft. In addition to the Chants' recent draft selections, netminder Scott Angevine (2008-11) earned a free agent contract with Sport Kansas City in 2012 season and spent much of the season as a MLS League Pool goalkeeper.

Overall, Ribeiro becomes the highest Chanticleer drafted since Joseph Ngwenya was selected third overall by L.A. Galaxy in the 2004 SuperDraft.

Ribeiro, who completed his undergraduate degree in December, collected a plethora of national awards in 2013 after leading the Chanticleers to a NCAA-high 19-win season that included Coastal's second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament's Third Round. The dominating midfielder paced the 2013 Chanticleers to a Big South regular season and tournament championship, while also earning the league's Attacking Player of the Year honor. He was also tabbed to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region first team, Big South Conference first team and Big South Tournament MVP.

Ribeiro finished his Coastal Carolina career ranked 11th all-time with 31 goals, tied for sixth with 26 assists, ninth with 88 points (31g, 26a) and second with 249 shot attempts. He also ranks second in the CCU record book with 86 career matches played and tied for eighth with 74 appearances in the starting XI. He led the Chanticleers to a 69-20-4 overall record, four NCAA Tournament appearances, five NCAA Tournament wins, three Big South regular season championships and two Big South tournament championships. Moreover, he became just the third Chanticleer to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy.
