CONWAY - Coastal Carolina head men's soccer coach Shaun Docking announced Monday that assistant coach Kyle Russell has been promoted to associate head coach of the program.

In just five seasons, Russell has helped guide the Chanticleers to six NCAA Tournament victories in five appearances, three Big South regular season the three tournament championships. Moreover, Russell has helped the Chants to a top-25 national ranking in each of the past four seasons, including a program-high ranking of fifth during the latter stages of the 2013 season. He is the first to earn the "associate" title in the program's history.

"I'm excited about being able to reward Kyle with this promotion," said Docking, who wrapped up his 17th season at the helm of the Chanticleers in 2014. "He has made a monumental impact in all aspects of our program in his time as an assistant coach and this promotion recognizes the significant contributions he has made. His influence on our players' development is evident and he has also worked tirelessly recruiting both nationally and internationally to find the student-athletes that can be successful on and off the field here at Coastal Carolina."

Russell spent the 2010-14 seasons as an assistant coach on Docking's staff after serving as a student volunteer assistant in 2009.

Since his elevation to assistant coach prior to the 2010 season, Coastal Carolina and 2010 National Champion Akron co-lead the NCAA with 85 wins apiece. The Chanticleers and Zips along with 2012 and 2013 College Cup participant Maryland are the only three programs in the nation to win 80-plus games over the past five years. In addition, Coastal has dominated the Big South Conference compiling a 40-4-2 record since 2010.

Russell, who serves as the program's primary recruiter, was heavily involved in the recruitment of eventual All-Americans Ashton Bennett (2011 & 2012), Pedro Ribeiro (2011 & 2013) and Shawn McLaws (2014). He additionally recruited NSCAA All-Region performers Justin Portillo, Uchenna Uzo, Ricky Garbanzo, Matt Risher and Ridge Robinson.

A two-time All-Big South selection during his playing days as a Chanticleer, Russell has oversaw Coastal's defensive efforts during the past five seasons. In those five seasons, Coastal has ranked in the top 20 percent of the NCAA in goals against average and shutout percentage each season. Coastal has also produce 48 shutouts, since 2010, including a 12 each in both 2012 and 2013.

Individually, Russell has coached four straight Big South Defensive Players of the Year, including the league's only two-time Defensive Player of the Year in McLaws (2013 and 2014). Moreover, throughout the past five season 12 Chanticleer defensive players have earned all-conference honors.
