Boiling Springs, N.C. – For the second time in the 2009 Big South Tournament, No. 4 Winthrop advances after defeating No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina 1-1 (4-2) in a penalty shootout in the fifth game of the 2009 Big South Men’s Soccer Championship Saturday at Gardner-Webb University’s Greene-Harbison Stadium.  The Eagles advance to Sunday’s championship game and will play the winner of No. 3 Liberty/No. 7 Radford for the Big South’s automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.

 

The first half of action saw scoring opportunities from both Winthrop and Coastal Carolina.  Both squads recorded three shots on goal a piece, but neither team could convert their chances as the game went into halftime scoreless.

 

Coastal Carolina took a 1-0 lead six minutes into the 2nd period when Big South Player of the Year Djamel Bekka struck a free kick from 20 yards out into the box.  Bekka’s ball found a leaping Leo Mukofsky who finished the ball past Eagle keeper Enrique Miranda.

 

Winthrop got the equalizer in the 85th minute, started by an intercepted ball by Jordan Osborn.  Osborn sent a pass to Miquel Casajuana who blasted a ball from 30 yards out to the right corner of the net past Coastal keeper Scott Angevine.  The remaining second half went scoreless with the game going into overtime tied at 1-1. 

 

The score after two overtime periods remained tied as Winthrop and Coastal Carolina advanced to a penalty kick shootout. 

 

The Eagles held a 6-5 shots on goal advantage over the Chanticleers.  Winthrop’s Miranda (10-5-4) tallied four saves in the game, while counterpart Angevine (7-0-6) recorded five saves for Coastal Carolina.

 

Winthrop improves to 10-5-4 on the year, while Coastal Carolina ends its season at 9-2-7.
