Coastal Carolina Repeats as Sun Belt Champions; 2-0 over Georgia State
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team repeated as Sun Belt champions by virtue of a 2-nil victory over the No. 2 seed Georgia State, Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
The win improved the Chanticleers record overall to 12-6-1 while the Panthers fall to 12-7-1.
Coastal got the scoring started in the first half when Saif AlHameli corralled a failed clear attempt by the Georgia State defense off a CCU corner kick and punched a hard shot from just outside the box to the near pole for the 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the 86th minute when Martin Melchor pushed a shot in a wide-open net, after Frantzdy Pierrot drew the Panther goalkeeper to him for the final tally and score of 2-nil.
The Chanticleers out-shot Georgia State 13-to-5 overall and 5-to-3 on corner kicks.
Coastal had several players to earn Sun Belt conference awards for their performances on the field during the 2017 season.
