No. 15/20 Chanticleers Eliminated From Big South Tournament
CONWAY - The No. 15/20 and third-seeded Coastal Carolina University men's soccer team played sixth-seeded High Point to 1-1 double-overtime draw Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the Big South Tournament. The Panthers ultimately advanced to the tournament's semifinal round by way of a 4-2 score in a penalty kick shootout.
Coastal made two of its four penalty kicks attempted, while the Panthers converted four of their five.
Coastal Carolina moves to 12-2-4 on the season and will now wait its NCAA Tournament fate. The Chanticleers will learn if they are selected as an at-large team in the national tournament on Monday at 1 p.m. via a live web stream on NCAA.com.
High Point (7-6-6) advances to face No. 2 seed Radford in Friday's semifinal round.
Coastal's Louis Dargent gave the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute with his third goal of the season as he slotted home a rebound following a Colin Marz header off the left post. The Chanticleers led the remainder of the half until High Point's Chris Ramsell headed in the equalizer with 27 seconds to play in regulation.
The sides traded glancing attacks throughout the 20 minutes of overtime before the match was ultimately decided via penalty kicks.
Coastal Carolina and High Point played a level first half on both the scoreboard and the box score as both teams attempted two shots on target. The second half opened up a bit more with Coastal out-shooting their visitors 10-6.
Both Coastal Carolina's Fernando Pina and High Point's Kody Palmer were credited with four saves during the match. In addition, Pina also made a save on High Point's fourth penalty kick during the shootout.
6' Coastal's Tobenna Uzo notched the game's first shot with a volley. High Point's Kody Palmer responded with the first save of the evening.
10' High Point's Avery Ryan received a long ball behind the CCU defense, but Pina was there to smother the shot attempt.
28' Jair Espinoza played Uzo behind HPU defense for a 1-v1 chance with HPU's Palmer. However, Uzo's shot was directly at Palmer, who easily made the save.
41' Ebe Kudolo split a pair of defenders on the right side of the box and ripped a shot that curled just wide of the far post.
45' The horn signaled for halftime - with the Chanticleers and High Point knotted 0-0.
51' Avery created the first chance of the first half after finding room on the left side of the 18-yard box. His shot attempt from a sharp angle was easily saved by Pina.
54' Dargent staked the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead with his third score of the season. Einarsson sent a free kick into the box that was driven into the right post by Marz. The rebound immediately deflected to Dargent who did not hesitate to hammer the home the shot.
56' Ryan Reid sent a searching ball into the box that met the head of Uzo. The header appeared destined for the far side-netting, but Palmer made an outstretched save to keep the match a one-goal game.
68' Espinoza forced a pair of blocked shots by High Point defenders after Coastal intercepted the ball from the deep in their attacking third as High Point was pressed high up the field.
80' Sergio Camargo nearly found an insurance goal with bicycle kick attempt on a well-placed cross into the box by Espinoza.
90' High Point's Ramsell sent the game into overtime with his header inside the right post. Pina lost his footing in the goal mouth before he was able attempt to punch away Renato Punyed's cross toward the near post.
90' The horn sounded, sending the match into overtime tied 1-1.
96' High Point earned a pair of corner kicks, but the Chants cleared the ball before any Panther was able to attempt a shot.
103' Martin Melchor weaved his way through the HPU defense, but his shot attempted was easily collected by Palmer.
110' The final horn sounded, officially resulting in a 1-1 draw.
