No. 14 Chanticleers Close Regular Season with 4-0 Win

CONWAY - The 14th-ranked Coastal Carolina men's soccer team used a goal in the first half and three more in the second to close the 2013 regular season with a 4-nil victory at Longwood on Saturday afternoon.
The Chanticleers, who wrapped up their 12th Big South regular season title with a win on Wednesday, end the regular season with a 14-4-0 overall record and a 9-1-0 Big South mark. Coastal has won the past three Big South regular season titles with a combined 28-1-0 record against league competition.
By virtue of their regular season title, the Chanticleers are the top seed in the forthcoming Big South Tournament and will host the eighth-seeded Winthrop Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Field. The semifinals and championship will be held Nov. 15 and 17 at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C.
Coastal was led on the afternoon by junior Ricky Garbanzo who scored a pair of goals in his second straight game and third time this season. Garbanzo first scored to break the scoreless tie at the 38:11 mark as he slotted home a centered ball played by Justin Whitefrom the right flank. He added his second goal of the game and team-leading 11th of the season in the 84th minute to give Coastal a 3-0 lead.
Pedro Ribeiro scored the Chants' second counter of the game in the 55th minute as he headed a Justin Portillocorner kick just under the crossbar. The goal was Ribeiro's 10th of the season and 30th of his illustrious career.
Sophomore Jakub Stourac added the Chants' final score of the match with a blast in the 89th minute of regulation following a Justin Portillothrow in. The goal was Stourac's second in as many games and fourth of the season, while Portillo's assist was his team-leading ninth of the year. Portillo now has 29 career assists, ranking as the fifth most in Chanticleer history.
Coastal's Devin Cookearned the win to improve his season record to 13-4-0. Cook's clean sheet was his ninth of the season, setting the CCU single season record for shutouts.
Coastal Carolina finished the game with a 14-3 advantage in shots, including a 10-0 edge in shots on goal. The Chants also earned five corner kicks to Longwood's two.
With the four-goal output against the Lancers, the Coastal has scored nine goals in its last two games and owns a 37-16 goal differential for the season. Moreover, the Chants outscored Big South opposition by a 23-5 margin during the 10-game conference schedule.
