White Leads CCU To 2OT Win Over Georgia State; CCU Co-Regular Season Champs and Top Seed in SBC Tournament
Conway, S.C. - Wes White's second goal of the match came in the 103rd minute and gave Coastal Carolina an exciting 2-1 double overtime win over Georgia State. With the win, the Chanticleers have finished their first year in the Sun Belt Conference with a 3-1-1 record and Co-Regular Season Champions of the Sun Belt Conference. The win means CCU will also be the top seed in their first-ever Sun Belt Conference Tournament held November 10-13.
Georgia State (12-7, 4-2 Sun Belt) came into the match in first place and all they needed to do was win the match and they would have won the regular season and been the top seed in next week's tournament.
It looked that way late as GSU's Frank Howard scored in the 70th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, a lead that would last 15 minutes.
CCU (7-6-3, 3-1-1) had plenty of chances to score throughout the match as they finished the match out shooting GSU 18-7 with an 11-5 shot lead in shots on goal.
White was able to even the score on an assist from Frantzdy Pierrot in the 85th minute to even the score. CCU had a couple of other chances to score at the end of regulation and in the first overtime session but was unable to find the back of the net.
Finally, Pierrot was able to break free down the left side of the field and found White in the middle of the box who was able to sneak the ball past GSU goalie Yannic Horn for the match winner at the 102:16 mark in the final overtime period.
The win set off a wild celebration for the players who were able to celebrate the win on Senior Day as Einar Einarsson, Ryan Reid and Elis Bjornsson were honored before the match as the three CCU seniors.
