No. 9/11 Chanticleers Play High Point to a 0-0 Draw
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The No. 9/11 Coastal Carolina University men's soccer team played High Point to a 0-0 draw in the Big South regular season finale for both teams at the Panther's Vert Stadium.
The draw moves the Chanticleers' record to 12-1-3 overall and 6-1-2 in Big South play. The Panthers go to 7-6-5 and 3-3-3 against league competition.
The shutout was Coastal's second straight and ninth of the season. The Chants have now surrendered only 10 goals through 16 matches.
The match played finished even on both the scoreboard and in the shots category as each team recorded 15 shots. Coastal put five on goal, while the Panthers' attempted four on frame.
The opening 45 minutes was played with the Chanticleers controlling the possession battle, but unable to find a go-ahead goal. High Point routinely countered once it gained control of the ball, but each time the Chants defense snuffed out the scoring threats. Coastal controlled the shot column on the scoreboard 6-2, including three on frame, while both of High Points' shots were from distance.
Coastal attacked early and often in the second overtime, but the High Point defense turned away each scoring opportunity. The Chants returned the favor through the latter stages of the half to send the game into overtime.
High Point registered three shot attempts to Coastal's one in overtime.
Coastal Fernando Pina and HPU's Kody Palmer each made four saves to record their respective clean sheets.
Coastal concludes its 2015 regular season Saturday at No. 22/28 South Carolina. The match, which is scheduled for 7 p.m., will be carried live on WatchESPN via the SEC Network +. Coastal has won five straight matches against the Gamecocks, including a 3-0 decision in Conway last season.
19' Ryan Willoughby recorded a shot on goal, but his attempt from distance was easily smothered by High Point's Palmer.
42' High Point's Renato Punyed attempted a shot from distance after a Coastal foul gave the Panthers a set piece opportunity.

49' Coastal produced shots in back-to-back minutes from Martin Melchor and Willoughby, but both were blocked.
57' High Point earned a corner kick. HPU's Austin Yearwood sent the corner to the fall post were it was headed high by Johnny Fenwick.
58' Jair Espinoza received a long ball in the box behind the High Point defense. The ball bounced high off the turf and Espinoza's header wet wide left of the goal frame.
73' Saif AlHameli attempted a volleyed shot through traffic that was saved by HPU's Palmer after a set piece near the edge of the box.
90' High Point sent a flurry of shots at the Chants in the final 20 seconds after a corner kick. However, a Pina punch-out and two deflections by the CCU defense kept the match scoreless.
90' The horn sounded, sending the 0-0 tie into overtime.
98' A header by HPU's Avery Ryan forced Pina's second save of the match.
100' Darius Strambler wrapped up the first overtime with a seeking shot from distance that ended just high of the left corner.
106' High Point's Colin Sweeney fired a shot from the right side of the box that forced a save by Pina.
110' The final horn sounded, resulting in a 0-0 draw.
