CCU Falls to 16th-Ranked UNCW
Conway - Coastal Carolina outshot one of the top teams in the nation 15-8, but it came down to two penalty kicks for the visitors as 16th-ranked UNC Wilmington defeated Coastal Carolina 3-1 in men's soccer action.
UNCW scored in the fourth minute of the match as Emil Elveroth scored on a perfect pass from Ben Fisher down the middle of the Chants defense for a quick 1-0 lead.
The two teams then battled for 33 minutes before UNCW pushed its lead to two goals on the first of two penalty kicks for the Seahawks. Kalvin Kromer was able to get the ball just past CCU goalkeeper Braulio Linares-Ortiz who actually got a foot on the PK, but not enough to keep the ball out of the net and UNCW led 2-0 at the half.
CCU scored their goal on a penalty kick from Yazeed Matthews in the 52nd minute to open the scoring in the second half, but that would be all the scoring CCU would do.
UNCW withstood several CCU shots and were able to finally put the match away when David Lozano knocked in a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.
Ryan Cretons played a strong goal for UNCW and finished the match with five saves while Linares-Ortiz had three stops for the Chants.
CCU jumps back into Sun Belt Conference action Sunday, Oct. 8 when they host Hartwick. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
