Men's Soccer Ends in a Scoreless Tie Against Liberty

The Chanticleers held the number one scoring offense to just three shots on goal.

CONWAY, S.C.-The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team earned their fourth tie of the season today (Oct. 2) as the Chanticleers and Liberty Flames played to a 0-0 draw at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium.

Goalkeeper Scott Angevine earned his first-career shutout as a Chanticleer, while Liberty netminder Andrew Madero had his sixth scoreless game in the 2009 season.

In the first 20 minutes of the game, the Chanticleers would tally five shots in which Madero saved two shots in a row off the feet of Riley Phelps and then Djamel Bekka. Phelps, Bekka, and Ross Kelly all had the game-high three shots on the day. The Chanticleers held the Flames to no shots on goal in the first half despite Liberty having four corner-kick attempts.

The second half would continue to be defensive battle between the two teams until Robert Hunter hit the cross bar at 62:04 to almost give the Chanticleers a goal. Both teams would, however, tally four shots each, but none on goal for both teams.

Despite no shots on goal the entire 90 minutes of regulation, the Flames would come attacking in the first overtime, registering three shots on goal. Both teams registered three shots in both overtimes.

The Chanticleers held the number one ranked scoring offense in the nation to just three shots on goal, and Liberty leading scorer, Darren Amoo, to one shot on the day.

Liberty is at now 5-1-2 mark on the season and 0-0-2 in the conference. The Chanticleers are now 3-2-4 overall and 0-0-1 in the Big South Conference. They will continue their conference play at home against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m.
