Senior James Stapleton had two goals and an assist in the 3-1 victory over the Wildcats |
Sept. 13, 2009
DAVIDSON, N.C.- Senior James Stapleton scored two goals and added an assist to help the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team earn its second win of the season, 3-1, over Davidson (2-1-0) in the concluding game of the Davidson/adidas Classic today (Sept. 13). The Chanticleers earned their second consecutive second-place finish after achieving the similar feat in the adidas/Coastal Carolina Invitational last week.
The Chanticleers opened the first two minutes of the game with a goal from redshirt-junior Riley Phelps, which was assisted by Stapleton.
The Wildcats responded to the Chants goal at 19:24 on a goal off the head of Charlie Reiter over goalkeeper Taylor Kelliher.
The two teams stayed at an even 1-1 going into the half. The second half was a good half for the Chants and in particular for Stapleton, who scored the game-winning goal five minutes within the start of the second half. The goal is the second game-winning goal in Stapleton’s career. Stapleton wouldn’t stop there, as Austin Eanes would make a cross pass to Stapleton, who headed the ball into the far post past goaltender Chip Sanders to secure the game with a two-goal lead.
The Chanticleers created more opportunities with a 5-2 shot-on-goal advantage, but the Wildcats outshot the Chants 17-8. Davidson also tallied more corner kicks with 14 as the Chants only had two.
Kelliher made one save on the day and received his first win as a Chanticleer.
Garnering All-Tournament honors for Coastal Carolina were Phelps, Luis Faz, and Alex Russell.
The Chanticleers improve to 2-2-1 on the season and will return home to play Furman on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m.
